Rheinbahn AG (Die Rheinbahn) plans to introduce a cashless payment system for its fleet in order to meet growing customer demand for digital payment options. The concept envisages the implementation of validators in all vehicles, enabling the use of debit and credit cards, prepaid cards and mobile payment methods. As part of a negotiated procedure, we were commissioned to supply a total of 3,550 validators and introduce the ID-based ticketing system.
The Cashlos programme (Calo for short) aims to completely eliminate cash from buses, light rail and tram services as well as customer centres and establish a digital, cashless system. The introduction of this ID-based ticketing system is intended not only to improve efficiency and safety for passengers and drivers, but also to increase customer satisfaction and make the use of public transport more attractive and accessible.
The Calo concept envisages the implementation of validators in all vehicles, through which the new digital tickets are issued directly in the vehicles. Tickets are issued exclusively digitally and virtually – there is no need to print paper tickets at all. Passengers receive confirmation that their ticket has been issued via positive visual and audible feedback on the validator. The travel authorisation information is stored in a cloud. Tickets are paid for exclusively by cashless means. Debit and credit cards, prepaid cards and payment options stored on mobile devices and wearables are accepted as payment methods at the validators. A best daily price calculation can be introduced for price calculation.
In addition, passengers will be able to check in/check out at the validators based on the eezy.NRW fare logic in Rheinbahn vehicles. Prepaid cards will be issued and credit topped up via the customer centre and sales partners. Several validators will be installed per vehicle.
To achieve the above goals, we will deliver a total of 3,550 kt 0346 validators between 2026 and 2027. The Tap'n Go mini terminals will be gradually introduced on buses and trains and offer all the features required for use on the Rheinbahn network. Thanks to the compact dimensions of the device, it is easy to install several validators in buses and trains.
